Since 2010 we have combined our core organic mussel farm with the production of cotton mesh, intended for use with the more environmentally sustainable continuous rope system. This biodegradable material – also known as stocking or socking - is produced on-site at our Westport base, and is supplied to mussel operations across Europe and the UK.
The cotton mesh is used to temporarily support the mussel until its thread (byssus) attaches to the mussel rope. We produce continuous mussel cotton, which vastly increases on farm productivity. The pure cotton mesh is knitted from biodegradable 100% cotton thread and degrades after deployment without leaving any residue on the rope at harvest.
We produce two main types of knitted mesh, both are suitable for the continuous rope cultivation method. The available yarn and mesh types are listed below.
Continuous knitted mesh used for mussel farming using the 'New Zealand' system.
Mesh has a diameter of 310mm.
Sold in bags packed in bulk bag supplied on standard pallets.
Approx. weight of filled bulk bag is 320kg.

Premium continuous knitted mesh used for mussel farming using the 'New Zealand' system. Knitted using an interlocking stitch for a more secure mesh.
Standard mesh has a diameter of 380mm and mesh size of 14mm. The diameter and mesh can be varied to suit.
Sold in bobbins on standard pallets. Each pallets contains 60 bobbins.
